Abstract:

Contains the papers of former executive vice chancellor of University of California, Berkeley, dean and professor emeritus at the Haas School of Business, and athletic director. Includes correspondence and papers regarding his book on China "A Glimpse at Some Flowers from the Bus;" newspaper columns written by Cheit; speeches, publications, reprints, book reviews, and manuscripts. Also contains files on his involvement with the expansion of Haas School of Business, the UC Athletics department, and the Richmond School Board. Also includes photographs of student demonstrations and sit-in at Moses Hall, University of California, Berkeley.

Earl F. Cheit came to the University of California, Berkeley in 1957. During the Free Speech Movement he was elected to the Emergency Executive Committee of the Academic Senate, and in the following year he was appointed executive vice chancellor of the campus. He was named dean of the business school in 1976, during which time he guided the school through the transition from an academic department to a professional school. Cheit held other key roles at the University of California, Berkeley, including executive vice chancellor (1965-1969), athletic director (1993-1994) and trustee of the University of California Berkeley Foundation. He also served as vice president of financial and business management for the University of California system from 1981-1982. He retired in 1991.
